Frequently Asked Questions

About the property

What is the Mosthütte?

The Mosthütte is a restored traditional Austrian cider house (Most = apple/pear cider, Hütte = house), reimagined as a short-term and extended-stay rental. It sits on the Schilcher Wine Road in St. Stefan ob Stainz, Western Styria, Austria — at the foot of the Koralpe mountains, surrounded by forest, meadows, and vineyards. The property includes approximately 3,500–3,800 m² of land with gardens, a pond, fruit trees, and outdoor seating areas.

Is there WiFi?

Yes. The Mosthütte has symmetrical gigabit fiber internet — not a consumer DSL or mobile hotspot. It is fast and reliable enough for video conferencing, large file uploads, streaming, and remote work.

Is the Mosthütte suitable for remote work?

Absolutely. The property was designed with remote workers and creative professionals in mind. It offers gigabit fiber internet, a dedicated workspace with desk and good lighting, multiple quiet working areas (indoor and outdoor), and the kind of distraction-free environment that makes deep work possible.

Writing & creative retreats

Is the Mosthütte a guided writing retreat?

No. The Mosthütte is a self-directed retreat space. We provide the environment — the quiet, the workspace, the forest, the internet — but we don't offer workshops or structured programming. This is for writers and creatives who know what they want to work on and need the space to do it.

What makes this a good place to write?

The combination of deep quiet, fast internet, a comfortable workspace, and immediate access to nature. Writers consistently report that the forest walks clear creative blocks. The absence of urban distractions creates conditions for sustained, focused work.

Team offsites

Can we use the Mosthütte for a company offsite?

Yes. The Mosthütte works well for small team offsites and strategy retreats (2–6 people). You get exclusive use of the property, gigabit internet, indoor and outdoor working spaces, and a beautiful setting that encourages the kind of thinking that can't happen in the office.

The area

What is the Schilcher Wine Road?

The Schilcher Wine Road (Schilcherweinstraße) is one of eight wine routes in Styria, running through Austria's smallest wine-growing region. It is named after Schilcher, a distinctive rosé wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape. The wine road passes through the Mosthütte's home municipality.

What is a Buschenschank?

A Buschenschank is a traditional Austrian wine tavern where the winemaker serves their own wine alongside cold food (typically cured meats, cheese, bread, and spreads known as Brettljause). Several Buschenschänke are within walking distance of the Mosthütte.

Can I go hiking from the property?

Yes. The forest begins at the edge of the property. You can walk directly into marked hiking trails without driving anywhere. Trails range from easy vineyard walks (1 hour) to full-day mountain hikes in the Koralpe range (up to 2,142 m).

What is the weather like?

Western Styria has a transitional climate — warm continental with some Mediterranean influence. Summers are warm (20–30°C), autumns are golden and mild, springs are fresh and green, and winters are cold with occasional snow but less extreme than the high Alps.
